How To Include Your Teen In Their Bedroom Remodel
Teenage bedrooms are often the most neglected rooms in the house, but it’s not uncommon for teenagers to have really great ideas about what they would like their own space to look like!

Of course, you should be involved, but don’t forget that your teen may have great insight into what they want as well! Here are some tips on how to include your teen in their bedroom remodel.
Decide on a Fun Theme
The first thing you should do is have a family meeting to discuss your teen’s preferences. Some teens might like clean lines, while others might prefer something more whimsical. It’s important to include them in the decision-making process because they will be living with it every day and they are the ones who need to feel proud of it.
Once you’ve decided on a theme, start gathering ideas for furniture or decorations. You can create mood boards on Pinterest or head out to stores together to see what’s available. When choosing items, consider what type of mood they create as well as their design features and any materials that are used.
For example, if your teen likes to read books before bed, then you could buy an armchair with a built-in bookcase in the back. If they love pets, then think about getting an area rug made from wool so Fido doesn’t get tangled up.
Choosing colors is also an important step. Many people make the mistake of selecting colors without considering how much light is available in the room. With this information, you’ll be able to choose colors that go well with your palette but also ensure there’s enough light for studying late into the night.
Give the Room a Splash of Paint
Incorporating your teen’s color scheme into their room can help make them feel more connected to the space. If you’re looking for a way to include your teen in the design process without spending too much money, try giving the room a splash of paint.
This is a relatively inexpensive and easy way to add some personality. They’ll appreciate it when they move out and want to sell their house! Plus, it’s something that will show as soon as they walk through the door; so if they are too tired from practice or school to take care of their chores around the house, this will show that you still love them even if you don’t always have time for them.
Paint isn’t the only thing that you can change in order to incorporate your teen’s style into their bedroom. Paint also works on things like curtains and furniture, so if your teen has an amazing desk chair or ottoman at home already, consider repainting these items with colors that reflect their interests. Be mindful of any allergies while choosing colors; this will be an added expense but worth it in the end.
Add Vibrant Wallpaper
If you are considering a peel and stick removable wallpaper for teen’s bedroom, consider including them in the process. A few ways to include them is by allowing them to help choose the color of the walls and flooring, picking out a new light fixture or vanity mirror, and choosing what black and white peel and stick removable wallpaper will be hung up on their walls.
You can also get creative with this and ask them what they want as a focal point on their wall or how they want their room to look when they wake up in the morning. It’s important that they feel like it’s their space and not just another bedroom being added to the house. They might want an accent wall, a chandelier over their bed, or something else entirely.
Just let them know that any changes will cost more than if you did all the work yourself because they’ll need to pay for supplies and maybe even install some things themselves but if it means spending less time arguing about which shade of blue should go on the walls then it’s worth it. Remember, these are your kids so the final decision is yours. But at least now you have an idea of what to expect when approaching their vision of a perfect room.
Don’t Forget the Ceiling
Your teen’s bedroom is their space, and it will be for a long time. It’s important to make sure you involve them in the process of designing their space so that they are invested in their room. The ceiling can be an exciting part of any room design and should not be overlooked when trying to get input from your teen on what they want in their space.
If you’re looking for inspiration, have a look at our blog post about our favorite ceiling ideas. We show you how we created this alluring moody look by installing cove lighting with one row of LEDs and strips running along the perimeter of the floor joists.
For this style of overhead lighting, the main light source comes from recessed lights installed directly into the ceiling. These can be installed or suspended by wires or brackets to create many different styles of fixtures including sconces, pendants, and chandeliers. One thing to consider when deciding where to install recessed lights is whether you want light coming up from below or reflecting off surfaces such as ceilings and walls.
